Excellence Upheld: Chemical Engineering student organization receives another AIChE award

October 26, 2020

For the 19th time in the last 20 years, Mississippi State’s chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers has been selected as an Outstanding Student Chapter by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

MSU’s chapter, based in the Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering, was one of approximately 35 student chapters to be selected. In total, just 10 percent of student chapters from around the world are chosen for the prestigious award.

“Our AIChE student leaders never rest on past laurels,” said Julie Jessop, professor of chemical engineering and the AIChE chapter advisor. “Each year they develop innovative events to serve the needs of our student body and the community at large.”

The MSU AIChE student chapter will be honored at the 2020 Virtual AIChE Annual Student Conference in mid-November. It will mark the 29th time since 1977 that the Mississippi State student chapter has been recognized by the AIChE.

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers selects distinguished student chapters based on their impressive participation by members, students and faculty, number of meetings and events, varieties of activities offered including career guidance and community outreach, and the chapters’ participation in local, regional, and global AIChE programs.

According to Dr. Bill Elmore, director of the Dave C. Swalm School of Engineering, the AIChE chapter is making a lasting impact at MSU.

“It is so great to see the chapter recognized for dedication and for maintaining our AIChE chapter “legacy,” Elmore said.
